Serpil Çetinkaya
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Adıyaman in 1987. She continues her work as a research assistant in the Department of Conservation and Restoration of Movable Cultural Heritage at Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters.
ARTIST STATEMENT
The globalization we are experiencing is rapidly and unstably transforming culture every day. Along with the idea that culture and the individual are inextricably linked, the countless daily actions of millions of people also influence each other within this transformation.
The information that emerges as a result of an individual's daily actions becomes relatively accessible in all situations as globalization displaces the concepts of near and far. At many levels, information constantly influencing each other from opposing situations in terms of time and space, causes the individual to be unable to perceive the culture they are in as a whole.
It is thought that this complication of the perception field makes it difficult for many people to question the space they live in and to try to understand what they experience in their daily lives.
In the society formed by this culture in which I, as an individual, live, readily recognizable elements in different living spaces, such as stacked planks, stones lined up side by side, tangled cables leading nowhere, or debris just removed from a workspace, constitute my focus of interest.
With these images that I photograph and record, I aim to point to the everyday world and our actions within it. This point, by creating a sense of touch on a two-dimensional carrier surface, I detach images from their contexts and try to obscure their previous meanings.
In this way, through these readily recognizable images, I question my own way of perceiving my environment regarding the perception and meaning created by culture. This questions I bring to the audience by making them visible through the works I produce.
