Hesen Çalak
Education
The artist received painting training in workshops located in Batman between 2005–2015.
Between 2012–2015, he participated in photography, stop-motion, pinhole, and animation workshops in various cities including Batman, Eskişehir, Mardin and Diyarbakır.
Between 2015–2019, he studied Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Mardin Artuklu University.
In 2018, he participated in the “August Workshop” organized by TÜYAP.
In 2019, he began his master's degree in Painting at Mardin Artuklu University with a study titled “Expression of Mythological Symbols in Contemporary Painting Art.”
Artist Statement
The subjects of my works are areas formed as a result of the deconstruction of truth, such as mythology and representation, and social problems arising from the partisanship of sociality, such as the Anthropocene and power. I address these topics because they create intense emotions like trauma, excitement, and anger in my life, and transport me to a space far from my routines.
John Berger, in his essay “Steps Towards a Small Theory of the Visible,” states that an artist should produce art based on their own experiences and concerns. Taking this statement as a basis, I have tried to express through my art practice the issues that have excited me since my earliest memories and the topics that have touched my soul enough to become my concerns.
