BIOGRAPHY

Born in Ankara in 1979, Erna Uçar graduated from Hacettepe University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Graphic Design in 2001. She lived in Moscow between 2004 and 2014 and was influenced by the meticulousness of Russian engraving art. Spending years living in Cyprus, Turkey, Russia, and Malaysia, experiencing different geographies, climates, and varying life and light, had a profound impact on her life and art.

Her paintings focus on the different physical aspects of the geographies she has visited. Erna works with colors that do not necessarily have to be in perfect harmony and uses silhouettes that remind us of her background in graphic design.

THE ROOM SERIES

In 'The Room' series, I explored the feeling of loneliness that affects masses and humanity, and how life can be reduced to a single dimension by a sudden blow. This series is created on raw cotton canvas larger than 1.5 meters, using materials such as acrylic, gouache, charcoal, and sand paste together, but in a way that each material's chemistry acts as distinct layers, bringing their unique textures to the forefront, making the material itself the main character of the series.

In 'The Room' series, I focused on the narrow spaces and the unengaged, expressionless figures and facial expressions within these spaces, reflecting the feeling of enforced loneliness of 2021 and the years that followed. Vibrant colors transform into somber moods, color into texture, motionless and sluggish bodies into intense expressions, and three dimensions into two, or even one dimension.
