Istanbul's Building Blocks
The rock we observe among Istanbul's structures transforms into a public structure in my paintings. Drawing from the concept of 'Bauen (To Build)', I construct the rock, which is a part of primitive life's structure, into the public space as a structure of modern life architecture, within the areas we inhabit.
I define myself as a public recorder. I narrate the change of past, future, and present through structures, buildings, and rocks. Sometimes, I build them as reminders in areas that have been destroyed or could be destroyed. For me, the rock represents the established structure of the past.
In my paintings, the rock, which has become an important image of the city, questions the present, even if it appears to be positioned in a future structure. The alienation we feel when we see the rock next to buildings and the question of why it is there are actually present in the city's plazas and newly block-structured buildings. I remind us of the alienation we have forgotten.
Structures are monuments of time. In some of my works, with their recording nature, I take buildings from their original locations and allow them to present themselves purely on an isolated ground, while in others, I stage them by defining a place in nature.
