ARTIST TEXT

In her paintings, she explores the complex self-states behind people's faces, stemming from issues of self and identity. Referencing Erving Goffman's presentation of self, she connects with how individuals exhibit different self-states in various situations. Goffman views the world we live in as a theater stage, and people as actors playing multiple roles. He states that our self is shaped by the individuals we encounter in our daily lives.

She explains how an individual, when encountering others, re-evaluates themselves, presents themselves in a new way, and implements new strategies for this, using the concept of self. The different self-performances each individual presents to people push one to question the concept of self. We recognize each other through these performances, and we introduce ourselves through these performances.

If we have a constantly changing self, the idea of an identity that we continuously redefine emerges. The individual navigates between different selves they incessantly construct. If we identify people based on the self they project, a complex self-structure can be seen as a de-identification.

The fluid and variable state of the portraits seen in Yağmur Doğan's paintings is linked to our constantly changing self-presentation. The portrait silhouettes captured in her works create a sense of de-identification, which can be explained by the face representing the image of the self presented by the individual. Her paintings create a moment of reflection on the person's constantly changing, complex self.
